Hi Kelle, Xanax tends to help IBS. But, the other things that really help are a high fiber diet, 6-8 glasses of water per day, cutting out dairy products (for some folks) and exercise. More people have had good luck with these things than most anything else for simple IBS. YMMV! I have checked out a lot of the IBS websites. You may want to do the same. There is a LOT of good info. on the net!! Best Wishes, Jen

just to piggy back Jens post I have been taking librax for my ibs. It is a combo med consisting of clididium (sp) and Librium. This has helped to bring my ibs under control, and even tends to help my anxiety a bit. Until my little set back earlier this week, I had not had ibs troubles for nearly 3 months. As for what jen says I will put a big ME TOO on that. d – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Everyone! Hello Kelle, I had the same question as you did (kinda). I posted it in the I.B.S. newsgroup. Someone suggested taking Caltrate 600. So, I did. It has slowed the cramping and (for lack of a better sentence) decreased the water content in my stools (I hate this topic.) and lessened my trips to the toilet. Anyway, I still have my Imodium A.D. moments, but they have lessened. Mel
Response:
hi, I have been suffering from panic, depression and I.B.S and have found great relief from all THREE with imipramine/tofranil an antidepressant from the tricyclic family. I have been taking it for a couple years now and my IBS is pretty much gone! The panic and depression are way more in control then it was. I seldom have panic attacks and find that I only feel it on PMS days and take adivan then when needed. I’ve also taken some classes on panic attacks taught by mental health and that helped me deal with an attack when I had one and I also learned methods of relaxation that helped with all three. I noticed when I went off my meds all three returned so for now Im staying with what keeps me sane, mostly panic free and from looking for bathrooms everywhere I went. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Everyone! Works for me too. TCA’s may cause constipation which makes them impossible to take for some people but it’s great for us IBS folk. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

I’m another one who takes a TCA (in my case Nortriptyline) very successfully for depression, panic disorder, irritable bowel syndrome and..migraine preventative. With that, a low dose of prozac and xanax I dont have anything at all thats worth complaining about! Quite a nice way to live.
