Getting more anxious

Question:

P.S.  I don’t yet have an E-mail address as this is my first venture into the Internet . For now, I can only communicate with you through the newsgroup.

Response:

: P.S.  I don’t yet have an E-mail address … Can we send you mail if we don’t use the letter E?                                         Best Wishes,                                         Arthur

I’m not sure, but, I think you would have to leave out the * – * too. JohnT

My anxiety has been getting worse over the past few months.  I have formally been off medication for a couple of years (except when I have to do something terribly anxiety-producing).  I’m thinking I need to go back to the doctor, but I am trying to have a baby.  I know you can’t take Xanax (which is hard for me right now).  Does anyone have any suggestions of something I could do or take that would not be harmful if I conceive? Thanks -Rachel

Hi Rachel, I assume when you say you’ve been off of medication for the past couple of years that those have been relatively anxiety free years.  Did you only use medication to relieve the anxiety, or did you combine relaxation and cognitive behavioral techniques.   For someone who has come as far as you have, please remember that setbacks are common and to be expected — but they don’t mean you have to go back to full-blown anxiety problems.  If you have used relaxation in the past, now is a great time to dedicate a solid block of time each day to it (30 minutes maybe?).  It’s also a good time to get some positive thinking books and reaffirm that you are okay.  It’s possible that trying to have a baby is bringing up fears of the process, committment, etc. — which I believe are all very normal things for someone on the verge of motherhood.  Realize that the additional stress of what you are attempting is going to have some impact, but it does for everyone else trying to have a baby as well! Just my .02.  Hang in there.  I think the best person to ask about what medications, vitamins, herbs, etc. would be your OBGYN. Best of luck — in both arenas! ALice

Dear Rachel, I hope that since you posted your message that you are feeling better about your increasing anxiety.  I’m not sure that I can be of any help to you.  Right now, I am on Zoloft, which deters my Panic Attacks and reduces my anxiety.  My husband and I are both in our 30s and would like to have children.  I have been mentally preparing myself for weeks to go off my medication so we can try to conceive. I don’t have any prescription for surviving the process – as you might be able to tell, I’m scared about going off the medication. All I can say is that my psychiatrist did some research and found one study of Prozac and pregnancy. I can give you the citation if you want (don’t have it in front of me right now).  My psych. also suggested I talk with my OBGYN.  Since I don’t have a regular OBGYN where I live now, I am going to seek out referrals from any and all people I know who understand Panic Disorder. This will be my approach. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in the pregnancy question.  I do believe – as some people have suggested to me – that I will survive it because having a child will be worth it to me! Take care!! lisa
