Depression and Anxiety

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Hi all, I just go back from an appointment with a spcialist (psychiatrist) and got diagnosed with Major Depression, Anxiety Disorder and OCD. He recommended an SSRI to cover all of the above. I am really scared, because I have tried different SSRI’s and they made me too nervous along with stomach upset. He suggested taking Prosac in liquid form and taking 1mg and just upping it by 1mg per week. I am so afraid that no antidepressant will even work for me, But I know I’ve got to try and keep trying until I find one. I would appreciate any of your unput. deeice

Hi deeice – sounds like you are lucky enough to have stumbled across a Doctor with at least half a brain :) The idea of starting on a low dose and building up slowly is a good one, and normally results in fewer unpleasant side effects than going straight onto a full therapeutic dose.  That might be why you had trouble with SSRI’s before. — Jon Guite Live support and chat for anxiety and panic disorders at the #anx/pan chat room in Dalnet.  For details see http://www.skcldv.demon.co.uk/anxpanw.htm

Dear Deeice, I have had wonderful results from Effexor extended release. IT is not a SSRI. It has been approved for general anxiety as well. I have been on 300mg since Dec of 1999 and I have been feeling pretty good. I hardly have to take the Ativan as needed but I still do take it. What works for me may not work for you as we are all different.I can just offer that you may have to try different meds and doses until you find the one that works best for you. Hello Deeice Wouldn’t anyone feel scared just having been told they have something with such ghastly big names as that! If you start reading this NG you’ll see that most people start to give it their own pet name.. they might say AD when they post, but usually they call it something like "IT’, or the "Black Dog". Somehow it is easier to say to a friend.."Sorry, can’t make it tonite, am having a fight with the Black Dog" than "Sorry, but my Generalised Panic Disorder with intermittent panic attacks prevents me from attending this evening". They are just words ! What you have is "Yucky"..and thousands, millions have it! Weird, because in the street we look like normal people<g Your job now is to begin your search to help yourself have a great life even tho’ you have "IT". Sure take the medications, but start learning about the heaps of other things you can start to do for yourself

Deeice, I’ve got the same diagnosis you have.  I’m on 60mg Celexa and 3mg Xanax. I tried using Prozac for my GAD a few years ago.  It worked, but it took months.  I think that it would have been better for me to have gone on Xanax or Klonopin (benzodiazepines) immediately rather than to have waited months for the Prozac to work.  The normal starting dose for Prozac is 20mg (which tends to rattle a lot of people); starting at 1mg and going up 1mg a week should help lots with the agitation that SSRIs can cause. Depending on how bad your anxiety is, you might think about adding a benzodiazepine.  Klonopin also has shown some promise with OCD.   Effexor is very much like an SSRI (it’s basically an SSRI that also blocks the reuptake of another neurotransmitter besides serotonin).  It can cause the same sort of agitation that the SSRIs cause, so in your case it probably should be thought of as being in the same class of drugs with SSRIs. Prozac tends to be more agitating than the other SSRIs when you first go on it, but starting at such a low dose should take care of much of the agitation. Good luck. Matt

Hi Deeice I know it’s scary to try different meds – I’ve tried a few myself with all sorts of anxiety and digestive side-effects. Eventually I found Paxil/Seroxat (an SSRI), which works really well for me, with very few side effects (apart from sleepiness).  I didn’t really want to try another med, but I was at the end of my tether with the PA and depression, so I did. Obviously everyone’s body is different – but I’m sure you WILL find something to suit you.  Increasing Prozac in small amounts should ease you in slowly.  Also – it’s not difficult to stop taking Prozac – so if it doesn’t work/horrible side effects etc, you can wean off it really quickly with no adverse effects. IMO it’s worth giving it a shot.  Good luck if you do! Cleo Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. Up to 100 minutes free! http://www.keen.com

Hi Deeice, I also have been diagnosed with the triumverate of depression, anxiety, and OCD. With a few bumps along the way, Paxil has helped me greatly.  I have found Paxil to be somewhat sedating; which helped in my case since I also had insomnia Karen

Charla thanks your reply helped me very much.  I also got a relpy that suggested that prozac may not be theh best drug of choice for PD and I’m going to consult with my doc.  With this disease it is hard to know whether it is your mind, the drugs, or just normal! Thanks again!  :) * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Hi! I’m from the UK, and recently, there has been publicity about Prozac – saying that it can actually make anxiety worse for a lot of people (even though it’s great for depression).  If anxiety is the key problem right now (but with underlying depression) is there perhaps another SSRI anti-depressant you could take, which might make you feel a little more ‘in control’?  I take Paxil and have no panic attacks and very little depression at the moment, and feel really quite ‘normal’ for the first time in years!! (I have had panic attacks for about 20 years). When I was on Prozac, I felt constantly manic, and out of control – like I wasn’t really ‘with it’. Good luck!! * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Yes and yes.. I went off of Zoloft after feeling better for a year or so and six months later I had a setback..I was put back on zoloft but must say it has been a liitle hard but im making it. And when I first aquired PA’s I had these thoughts that I was going crazy and I might hurt someone but I didnt want to and the thought that I even thought about it being possible scared me.I heard from a woman that could not look at a knife or scissors ect..because this would start a train of thoughts that always came back to what if. The thing I learned and must be true for me anyway is that there is no way you are going to hurt another living creature intentionally. These are only scary thoughts occupying your mind and there is no reality base to them.It was because I give these thoughts more attention then they deserved and was scared of them that they remained constant until I believed I would not act on the thoughts. A older wiser mother told her daughter that then relayed it to me her daughter… that we can not help what are mind congers up but that does not mean we have to entertain them. Hope this helps a little.
