Question:
While there maybe some knee jerk sympathy in ASD for people that cannot work because of their condition, I think there is quite a set of folks here that work hard and successfully despite thei r problems and experiences with depression. — Yours, Cup’oJoe "the less I seek my source for some definitive…" "the closer I am to fine" -indigo girls – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Merritt What do you think about a 38 year old guy, who still lives at home with Mom and won’t work and has no means of support? Mom has to support him and his excuse is that he has panic attacks and cannot work. If your question is a serious one, might I suggest that you pop over to alt.support.anxiety-panic and ask there. Mom has to |support him and his excuse is that he has panic attacks and cannot |work. Well, first off….there’s really nothing wrong with living home with parents at any age. Being supported by parents is another story, however. I have mixed feelings on this cause it involves panic attacks. If you never had an attack, you’ll never know the feeling of what one goes though. I’ve had them for 28 years and it was like being brought up in HELL. Sometimes I got them night after night. However, there is help for this disorder and your brother should seek professional help. My attacks took a turn for the worst when it started to affect my walking abilities. I would have such an attack that I would practically collapse in the street. Thats when I decided to seek help. I sought help back in 1981 by going to my primary doctor which sent me to a neurologist. They classified my problem – and I mean that in a big way – as anxiety/panic disorder. There were no meds or help available at that time…..just a name for the disorder. Since then, it has progressed into social phobia, agoraphobia, bridge and tunnel phobia, severe depression, low self-esteem and probably a few more since I can’t think of them at the moment. Your brother should seek the help that is out there for if that is truely his condition, he will improve in a small amount of time and will be able to live a somewhat normal life. He won’t be perfect but he’ll be able to accomplish tasks that he was unable to do before. Good Luck…… Steve P.
