Question:
Yeah, Kevin, it seems we share the affliction as so many others on this website. I do believe there’s an epidemic of panic in the air, and it’s not all physiological or psychological. The culture is too complex, too much to do all the time, too psychically oppressive. I would love to travel the slow, simple road for a while. I’ll even take some boredom for a change. Feel as if I’m running amuck at all times. And just about everyone I know feels the same way. So good luck to ya, and thanks for the info. Mano – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Kevin–let’s just say that without Ativan I would be skyrocketing into zones of panic beyond Kafka’s reach. I hear ya! I was the same around 3/2002. It had gotten the point where I was having extreme PA’s all day long, and Xanax put a halt to that. I started with the panic attacks over a decade ago during a wretchedly long custody battle. Thought I was having heart attacks, but they checked me out and sent me to the head people. So I was diagnosed with panic disorder. That what I thought as well. 5 days prior to the first full blown PA, I was having really bad chest pains. Then 2 minutes before the PA hit it all went away and felt faint so I rushed myself to the ER. Over the next 2 months I had 3 EKG’s, X-rays, CAT Scan, bloodwork, etc.BTW I diagnosed myself with a panic disorder… The Ativan keeps me level, though, as you know, once you’ve had a panic attack, others always lurk in the shadows, waiting, like the ancient god Pan, to spring. Yes I do know, but I can also feel Xanax doing it stuff at times when I feel the panic coming on. Of course it is possible to still have a PA on any anti-anxiety med but it sure does help tremendously… I can’t say Ativan is miraculous or anything for I do believe I have side-effects. I think it makes one more depressed, which I assume it has to in order to suppress the panic. Some may disagree with you here and I’m one of them <g Having panic attacks all day, everyday really put me in a depressed state of mind for weeks and once I got the panic "taken care of" this feeling lifted for me. But I do (still in the process figuring this one out) have depression as well, and Xanax does not make this feeling worse. So in a sense you can say benzo’s (Ativan, Xanax, etc.) do act like an anti-depressant as well… But I’ve tried anti-depressants for it and I feel utterly BAD on those things. So I assume I don’t need them. So it’s a trade-off: sort of low-grade melancholy, sometimes heavy, in exchange for zapping of panic. Wonderful, eh? I’ve been there myself. Tried Paxil and it sure "helped" lift my mood a lot (little too much) but the side effect is the panic returning. I tried to balance out the effect by changing my dose of Xanax but the Paxil kept on coming through… What worked best of all for me, and still do, is exercise, shamanic drumming, meditation, and, some time ago, a vision quest out in the wilderness. Anyway, thanks for the kindness of a reply. Mano I always say whatever works, stick with it… Kevin…

Thanks for the information. I’ve had these hives, just a few here and there, they come and go, just about all my life, but they seem to have intensified coincidentally with the use of Ativan. These dermatological things are the great mysteries. MANO – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Does anyone know if there’s a connection between prolonged low-grade use of Ativan and hives? Please inform. I’m new to this and don’t exactly know where to go for the answer. MANO I was on Ativan for 4 weeks in the past. Okay not very long but I’ve been on Xanax for 14 months which is in the same class of drugs and never experienced hives nor have I ever read anything about it concerning prolonged Ativan use. This may not be relevent in your case but I believe hives can be a physiological symptom as well (I’ve had this a few times years ago with no explanation for it). It’s not always purely physical… Kevin…

Oh now I see why you asked. I had it the worse and for the last time around 1995. I always thought it was an allergic reaction to a certain food or maybe even poison ivy, but all I got was looks of puzzlement from doctors ; ) You’re right they are mysteries. It could be a reaction from Ativan. A friend of mine had an allergic reaction and got hives from Zoloft so who knows. Everyone is different… Hope it goes away for you soon. BTW How’s the Ativan working for your anxiety? Kevin…

Hives can be cause by just about anything, including meds and stress and a lot of other things. You say you get them here and there? It’s possible you are dealing with shingles and not hives. Hives tend to be all over, while shingles tend to be very localized. Not sure what the connection with the Ativan would be, unless you’re having an allergic reaction to it. If they are hives, and you only get them when you take Ativan, then it could be a reaction. Still, stress and anxiety could be causing the hives (or shingles) and it’s just a coincidence they appear after taking Ativan. I doubt it’s a big deal, but I’d check with your doctor. Sheldon

Thanks for the tip, Sheldon–I did some reseach on shingles, and that’s not what I have. I’m pretty sure. THese are just weird little hives that flare up, then go away, then flare up somewhere else. And, yes, I do associate them with stress. They also seem to be worse in warm weather, which I unfortunately love, and when I sweat, say, during exercise. Glad it’s not shingles. That sounds horrible. Thanks. Mano – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hives can be cause by just about anything, including meds and stress and a lot of other things.
