At the weirdest moments

Question:

Hi all… I have PD for ’bout 2 years now, and I’m in therapy for it. (We’re still not sure if I should get cognitive therapy or not). I am wondering now tho if anybody else behaves just as I tend to do. I’m quite good at skipping meals, and I tend to eat quite unhealthy too at times. Then I get a mania for say three days that I NEED to eat healthy stuff, and I’m doing everything I can to get that done (Like, eating a lot and worry sick that I might die because of my eating habit). I don’t have anorexia, but it is so often on my mind (my eating habit). Thanx for letting me ramble ;) and for any reply:) Greetings, Arjen http://www.euronet.nl/users/schuma/index.html

I am new to this group.  I have never been diagnosed with panic disorder, but I have alot of trouble with anxiety…to the point that it sometimes paralyzes me and I am unable to do the daily things I need to do.  Zoloft has reduced these symptoms alot but not cured them…although it has cured my chronic depression. I am fascinated by what you said in your posting. It seems that many of us, if not most, have acid stomach, GERD, etc.  Dr. Shipko, who posts here, and others have linked a peptide hormone from the digestive tract to oversecretion and backflow of digestive enzymes.  This same peptide hormone will cause panic attacks.  Eating a lot of fat stimulates this enzyme (cholecystikinin sp?).

I do have problems with acid stomach and reflux!  No one has ever suggested to me before that the anxiety might be chemically related to the stomach problems.  I do tend to have a "nervous stomach" and when I am anxious I also get severe gas and diarrhea.  Is this common too? Some people do seem to benefit from fasting, although it makes me quesy by the end of the day.  Many others prefer a hypoglycemic diet with 4 or 5 small meals instead of 2 or 3.  This works much better for me but is hard to maintain.

As you mentioned, I eat 4 or 5 small meals, which seems to help with the stomach problems.  I also have problems with my blood sugar dropping and it helps with this as well. CBT does seem to help a lot of us.  I’ve seen a therapist for several years and we use a mixture of methods.

What is CBT? Thanks! willow
