Question:
Thought I would share an interesting (if brief) article I found in September’s _Discover_ magazine. The subject of the "History of Science" page was the theory that Charles Darwin suffered from panic disorder. Medical historians reviewed his notes, letters, autobiography and other writings, and found that these sources described a classic case of panic disorder. (Darwin had at least nine of thirteen symptoms usually associated with the disorder, as per a standard physicians’ reference.) Maybe nothing groundbreaking, but I thought that it was interesting. Be sure to read the article at your local library! (I was thinking of typing the article out, but it might be at their web site, I’ll have to check.) http://www.enews.com/magazines/discover Happy trails, chris

Several weeks ago I borrowed from my public library, a biography on Charles Darwin which is based entirely on his life with panic disorder. The author, a psychiatrist whose name I can’t remember exactly-I think it’s Browler or something like, that holds the position that GAD/Anxiety (there is little evidence that Darwin had out of the blue panic attacks) is not a result of "genetic loading". The book was written in 1990 and is very interesting, particularly if you are a Darwin fan. On the up side in the last 10 years of his life Darwin was virtually panic free. Liz L
