Response:
this is my first time posting a message. I just found out what all my stress and worry of being sick all the time is – I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I thought I was dying. I have had such a large range of symptoms and have been scared to death. I am seeing a therapist and making a little progress. I am not on any meds. I still wonder sometimes if there is something else causing these horrible symptoms. My doctor says I’m obsessive about my health. Any one out there with similiar problems?
It’s pretty common for those of us with pad to be obsessive about our health. Have you been physically checked out for illnesses that can mimic anxiety? Ray
Response:
I am going through the exact same thing. I have been freaking out reading things on the internet, and thinking I have all these illnesses. I have tingling sensations, I get dizzy, I am so scared, and would love to hear what is going on with you… my name is Gina

Sorry to hear it. I’ve been suffering panic attacks for 10 years. Heart palpitations, difficulty breathing, dizziness, chest pain, hot flashes, increased blood pressure, disorientation. You name it, I’ve been there. Although finding a good therapist helps and maybe some Xanax, two things I learned in a seminar helped me keep my attacks to a minimum for a long time…(1) the attack will pass, you won’t die from it, and (2) think in the now – focus your concentration on something real, not thoughts – sing a song (that helps me the most), call someone and talk, read, do crossword puzzles, etc. Good luck.

This is my first time looking up info about anxiety and panic attacks on the net. I’m learning a lot. I have been having attacks I think primarily because of my health. My thyroid quit over two months ago and I began hormone therapy. I had one month of success on the therapy, then began getting panic attacks about once a week, then 2-3 times a week. Now I’m getting them several times a day. My doctor prescribed Xanax .5mg to help with the attacks until they check my blood work to see if I’m getting too many hormones. Although meds don’t solve the panic attacks, they sure lessen the symptoms. I feared becoming addicted, but as strong as my attacks are, I’ll take the meds for now!! Good luck to you.

Hi Shelbie, Welcome to ASAP! I first have to ask if you have been *properly* diagnosed with anxiety/panic disorder? By this I mean, has a medical doctor tested you for other illnesses with similar symptoms. Things like thyroid disorders and other conditions should first be ruled out before anxiety/panic can be diagnosed with any certainty. Assuming you have been *properly* diagnosed with anxiety or panic disorder, you should keep in mind that these disorders can still be a medical issue. In other words, such disorders can be the result of some hormonal imbalance, which means that medications are sometimes necessary for relief. But, yes, psychotherapy is often important too; and most often Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most effective of the psychotherapies. There is much to learn about anxiety/panic disorders, and the more you know the better off you’ll be during recovery. I highly recommend Dr William Kernodle’s book, "Panic Disorder; The Medical Point of View," which describes anxiety, panic and phobias very well. It also explains both therapy and medication treatments. The book is not difficult to read, it’s not very big, and it’s not expensive either! You can easily order it via Amazon (http://amazon.com) or find it in most large book stores. There is also a ton of anxiety/panic related web sites with diverse perspectives. Feel free to explore them via the anxiety-panic search engine (http://anxiety-panic.com). Best Wishes, Arthur
